WHY IS FAT SO IMPORTANT FOR COW PERFORMANCE?
- Fats are part of the cellular and extracellular membranes of all tissues
- They are solvents of vitamins A, D, E, K and promote their absorption
- They are sources of phospholipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids and other biologically active substances
- They are part of nerve cells
- They are precursors of some enzymes (including sex enzymes)
- Perform a protective function
- A source of energy (1 gram of fat contains about 37 kJ of energy, while proteins and carbohydrates average about 17 kJ).
To meet the needs of a highly productive cow, her diet should contain about 6% fat in dry matter. However, it is practically impossible to achieve this level with conventional feed alone – usually diets without additional special products contain about 3-4% fat in dry matter.
It is very important what form of fat is fed, because an excessive amount of unprotected fat will create a film that physically covers the fiber and kills rumen bacteria and, as a result, reduces fiber digestibility.
HOW PROTECTED FATSWORK
Unsaturated fatty acids, which are the basis of fats from plant components, will be biohydrogenated to stearic acid when they enter the rumen, which reduces the overall digestibility of fat. In the process of such biohydrogenation, trans fats will be formed, which inhibit the formation of fat in the mammary gland.
PERFORMANCE WITH MEGALAC AND MEGA FAT
Protected fats are a source of energy and essential fatty acids for high productivity and healthy cows
IMPORTANT FATTY ACIDS
It is important to remember that cows do not digest fat as a whole, but rather individual fatty acids, so the fatty acid composition of the diet is of key importance.
One of the most important for cows is oleic acid (C18:1). Studies have shown that it helps prevent fat loss, improves reproduction rates and increases the overall digestibility of fat in the diet. However, to obtain this effect, this acid must be fed in a protected form.
No less important is palmitic acid (C16:0), which contributes to the fat content of milk.
Including of fat with a high palmitic acid level into the diet helps to increase the fat content of milk
Including of fat with a high content of protected oleic acid into the diet helps to maintain body weight
Oleic acid helps to increase the overall digestibility of fat
BENEFITS OF USING PROTECTED FATS:
- Increased milk yield
- Increase of fat content in milk
- Preventing loss of body weight
- Improved reproduction
- Reducing heat stress
- Reducing methane emissions
