Accuracy is key in modern poultry farming. Not only the economics but also the planning of the entire production process depend on how accurately the farmer knows the weight and condition of their flock.
For a long time, the only way to assess this was by manually selecting and weighing the birds. This is a labor-intensive process that takes a lot of time and is only about 70% accurate.
Today, Calyx artificial intelligence cameras offer a solution — an innovation that is changing the very paradigm of poultry management.
SMART CAMERAS: SEEING MORE THAN HUMANS
The technology combines computer vision, special sensors, and proprietary machine learning algorithms. The cameras operate in plug-and-play mode, requiring no complex maintenance.
Key features:
- Measurement accuracy of over 97% in any lighting conditions.
- Average bird weight in real time without human intervention.
- 7-day forecasts for shipment planning and feeding optimization.
- Assessment of flock uniformity — a key parameter of economic efficiency.
- Analysis of bird growth and shape with gradual self-learning of the software for specific farm conditions.
In the future, the system will receive even broader functionality: control of poultry body temperature, analysis of behavior during feeding and watering, monitoring of litter (temperature, humidity), etc.
GLOBAL AND UKRAINIAN EXPERIENCE
Today, Calyx technology has already proven its effectiveness in the US, Canada, Brazil, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Spain, and other countries.
The system has been tested on various breeds: Ross 308, Ross 708, Arbor Acres, Cobb 500, etc. — and has shown consistent results everywhere.
The first experiments have already started in Ukraine:
- In the Kyiv region, one camera has been installed in each poultry house on one of the farms.
- In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, two cameras have been installed in one poultry house (due to the larger number of birds).
It has now been a week since the launch, and the cameras have already started self-learning based on data from real bird measurements. The initial results are being compared with the scales on the farms, and high accuracy is already evident.
The experiments are expected to confirm that the system works equally effectively with birds of different genetics (from different parent flocks) and truly corresponds to actual live weight.
BENEFITS FOR THE PRODUCER
Calyx cameras allow you to move from “manual assessment” to data-driven digital management:
- reduction of the human factor and errors;
- early detection of problems (stress, mortality, slow growth);
- optimization of logistics and slaughter planning according to actual weight;
- alignment with market demand: the system generates harvest schedules based on customer orders.
In this way, poultry farming is transformed from a production-oriented model to a demand-oriented model.
A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE
Calyx defines its mission as follows:
“We empower farmers to make data-driven decisions that improve production processes and achieve optimal results in animal health, welfare, and profitability.”
Today, this technology is already changing poultry farming around the world. Tomorrow, it will become the standard in Ukraine as well.
Those who implement AI cameras today will gain a competitive advantage tomorrow.
